I’m going to Girl Scout Camp this summer and two of the “must haves” for camp are Swaps and Sit-Upons. These are two long-time traditions of Girl Scouts. Swaps are the coolest, they are something you make that is small enough to attach to a safety-pin and you “swap” with other Girl Scouts the whole week you’re at camp. Everyone pins the swaps on their hats and it’s really fun to collect them. Swapping helps you meet other people because you have to go ask someone if they want to swap! (You have to make alot, so you have plenty to swap with friends…we made 100 this year) Here’s a pic from last years collection.
Its fun to see how creative everyone can be with their swaps. Some are as simple as buying a bunch of balloons or plastic animals and sticking a pin through them. In the picture above, you can see someone glued a sea shell to a piece of pink felt….its pretty cool. Below are my swaps for this year.
We bought a bag of plastic beads and a bag of butterfly/dragonfly beads at the craft store and strung those on large safety pins. Since we filled the large pin with beads, we added a small pin at the top to be used to attach to the hat. (if you do this, you need to string the beads upside down)
My Mom did some Cupcakes swaps. (she’s going to volunteer one day, so she’ll get to swap too) We found the felt Cupcakes in a package of 12 for $1 in the dollar bins at Target, so we couldn’t pass those up. My Mom printed off 1″ squares of my cartoon and taped those on the opposite sides of all the pins to really personalize it. (we only used one pin per swap on these since there is space to attach to the hat)
My hat is ready for a new year…with my new swaps attached:
SIT-UPONS!! This is easy-peasy!!…a sit-upon is something you take to camp and have it to sit on (upon)! Since we are camping and we sit in a circle a lot, these are what we will use to sit on so we don’t have to sit on the ground or grass. Last year, we made one out of two hot pink place mats, and it was really cute…..but I can’t find it! But, Mom found something cool this year at a Family Dollar Store for less than five bucks!!!….an animal print throw rug.
Its very flimsy (that’s why it was so cheap) but, it will easily fold up into my backpack and its light weight!
(My baby sister had to show it off too!)
I hope I’ve taught you a little about some Girl Scout Camp traditions and I can’t wait to go to camp so I better go finish packing!!!….Have Fun with your Girl Scout Traditions and hopefully you’ll get to go to camp…its FUN-FUN and I can’t wait to fill my hat with new Swaps!!
